Smarter Balanced Assessment

Smarter Balanced is a state-led consortium working collaboratively to develop next-generation assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that accurately measure student progress toward college and career readiness. The Consortium involves educators, researchers, policymakers, and community groups in a transparent and consensus-driven process to help all students thrive in a knowledge-driven global economy.

The California Department of Education has determined that the CST for English language arts and math will not be given this school year. However, 5th grade students will still be required to take the Physical Fitness Test in February and the Science CST in May.

This spring, all districts will field test the new Smarter Balanced State Assessment. This test will be administered on computers to students in grades 3-11. The State Test will no longer be administered to second grade students. The State will not release student scores or data from this field test. The purpose of the field test is to “test the test.” We are working closely with District personnel to prepare for this field test. More information, including the dates of the test at Montebello Gardens Elementary will be shared as soon as it is available.

Practice Tests

Become familiar with the test administration by exploring the Smarter Balanced Practice Tests. Practice Tests are available for grades three through eight and grade eleven in English-language arts and mathematics. The Practice Tests provide a preview of the Smarter Balanced assessments, but do not reflect the full range of content that students may encounter on the actual assessments.
