Common Core State Standards

Teachers, parents, school administrators, and experts across the nation have come together to establish a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts and mathematics that states voluntarily adopt. The standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter credit bearing entry courses in two or four year college programs or enter the work force.

Our teachers here at Montebello Gardens Elementary have been working very hard throughout this transition to the new Common Core State Standards. Teachers are focusing on the following strategies:

  • Reading nonfiction articles
  • “Close Reading” or the careful, purposeful rereading of a text
  • Informational writing
  • Math Journals – explaining our thinking while we solve problems

All teachers have been attending Common Core training provided by the District and at our school site. We will continue to work hard and make sure that all students receive the support they need throughout this transition. Thank you for all your support!

This three-minute video explains how the Common Core State Standards will help students achieve at high levels and help them learn what they need to know to get to graduation and beyond.
